ECO ROAD Concept – the easy way to the future of modern roads

The future of road transport is in „smart“ roads. That means roads that are not only characterised by good quality and low construction costs but that ensure driver safety or reliable tracks for autonomous vehicles - all of this with a minimal impact on the environment.

ECO ROAD TEAM has decided to create a product which would help construction companies to implement this vision in practice..

ECO ROAD Concept – building and using smart roads

Building and using such roads, which will undoubtedly increase during the following decades, is the only possible alternative for future road development. The goal is, simply put, to have roads and motorways like this in the year 2050. They will also be more easily maintainable for administrators of transport infrastructure. It is also very important to ensure that these trends are perceived by both experts and the general public.

One of the expert visions targeted at this milestone consists in so-called 5th generation roads (hereinafter only the R5G). It is another step in the evolution of roads:

  • First generation: unpaved roads (with compacted surface)
  • Second generation: set paved roads
  • Third generation: smooth finish (asphalt roads)
  • Fourth generation: motorways
  • Fifth generation: just coming into existence – referred to as adaptive, energy-positive, digital, etc.)

The ECO ROAD TEAM has decided to create a product which would help construction companies to implement this vision in practice. This is something they cannot avoid but which some of them are afraid of.

Our ECO ROAD Concept is intended particularly for these. It combines several technological products which allow roads to be constructed in a better way and at significantly lower costs. We are firmly convinced that even today, in co-operation with business contacts, we are able to implement this R5G vision intended for the years 2035 - 2050. For this purpose, we already have all the necessary technologies and trained experts, and above all experience obtained from more than 300 km of road where we successfully tested this concept. These visions for the next decades can, without exaggerating, be transformed into reality much sooner - using current solutions, equipment and knowledge of participants in construction projects.

ECO ROAD Concept – road reconstruction process

The ECO ROAD Concept complies with the principles of Industry 4.0. The concept smoothly implements three ordinary technologies into the road reconstruction process, and interconnects them into a functional system using software optimisation:

  • Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) that reveals road condition before reconstruction begins.
  • "Intelligent" pavement milling (optimisation of milling depth, thickness of road layers and quantity of material).
  • Cost-saving construction material handling using the „just in time“ method which has been well-proven particularly in automotive industry.

We believe that this interconnection enables the industry to ensure construction of high-quality safe pavements at reasonable costs.

This concept has a great advantage: construction companies that decide to use it basically need not learn anything new. They even need not invest in new equipment, complicated technical solutions or training of their staff. It is good for the companies that they are not forced to change neither their work methods nor the system of task assignments and executions. In other words: our ECO ROAD Concept is to serve companies that are afraid of abrupt changes, expenses for technologies connected with further market development and its expected requirements for road and motorway quality and facilities.

Inclusion of their workers, designers, geo-technicians, geodesists and construction site managers should work in a natural way in the style "only what has really been done is decisive". We believe that we can persuade them that the use of our methods and technologies will make their work easier and enhance the quality of the "product" the creation of which they participated in.

The goals of ECO ROAD Concept

The ECO ROAD Concept has a clear goal: creating a unified approach to road administration and repairs. Therefore, we have set six objectives:

  • Decreasing pavement milling time during road repairs by 33 per cent.
  • Reducing the carbon footprint by 30 per cent thanks to the use of more effective methods.
  • Extending road lifetime by 35 per cent.
  • Increasing the quality of road repairs by 15 per cent.
  • Unambiguously and provably determining the responsibility of persons and companies for the intermediate results of their work.
  • Involving workers so that they embrace the work on R5G vision and want to actively participate in its accomplishment.

In the text below, we introduce the three basic pillars of our service within the ECO ROAD Concept. Putting these solutions into practice requires no changes or investments by construction companies:

  • Geotechnical solutions - The ground-penetrating radar provides additional information on conditions existing under the road surface necessary for subsequent design works.
  • Solutions for automation of works - Virtualisation of processes with the use of very accurate coordinates and 3D laser technology helps to prepare accurate construction work assignment for workers and construction machines (pavement milling machine and finisher).
  • Solutions for material handling - Information on the plans for material transport, navigation, etc. is used in material handling operations.
